Pecos River farmers fighting Roswell for water

Some farmers on the lower Pecos River want the state engineer to prevent Roswell-area farmers who haven't held their water rights as long from pumping ground water.

The Hope Community Ditch Association and farmers Louise and Francis Tracey of Carlsbad demanded this week that state Engineer John D'Antonio enforce a priority call.

And they want D'Antonio to stop Roswell farmers with junior rights from pumping.

The state has been trying to settle decades-long litigation over water on the Pecos and avoid a priority call.

The call would cut off those whose water rights were obtained most recently and enable the state to send water to Texas as required under an interstate compact.
