U.S. Water to Receive Governor’s Safety Awards

Somerville, N.J., April 27 – U.S. Water L.L.C., a national leader in water and wastewater management, and two U.S. Water contract facilities have been informed they will receive New Jersey Governor’s Annual Occupational Safety and Health Awards on May 14 for achieving an exceptionally low rate of workplace injuries and illnesses.

The Recognition Award will be presented to U.S. Water for maintaining a lost-time incidence rate of 3.0 or less for 1997, well below the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) national rate of 5.7 for 1996 (the last year for which figures are available). In addition, the North Brunswick and Manchester Utilities, both New Jersey contract facilities, will be awarded Citations of Merit for finishing the calendar year without any lost-time work-related injuries or illnesses.

The awards represent U.S. Water’s continuing efforts to reduce its already low rate of injury and lost workday cases. Colleen Cella, Corporate Health & Safety Officer for U.S. Water, noted that U.S. Water’s injury and lost workday rates have dropped considerably between 1992 and 1997. In fact, U.S. Water’s rates stand approximately two-thirds lower than the industry standard.

"Safety is always first and foremost," said Scott Donnenberg, U.S. Water’s Group Health & Safety Supervisor. "U.S. Water takes a proactive approach by assigning a Site Health & Safety Officer to each site, holding monthly safety meetings, and maintaining over a dozen operator safety re-certification programs."

The awards program, sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Labor, the New Jersey State Industrial Safety Committee and the New Jersey State Safety Council, recognizes both public and private companies for their achievements in the prevention of workplace injury and illness.
