HULL - Residents voted at Hull's council town meeting to borrow $280,000 to continue studying the possibility of building a desalination plant.
The money would continue the work of the town's water resources committee, which has been developing feasibility studies for the plant.
The new study would be an in-depth look at where the plant could be built for convenient intake of salt water and discharge of brine; if the town should enter into a private-public partnership with other entities or go it alone; and whether it would be cost effective to buy or lease the current distribution system owned by Aquarion Water Co.
Aquarion Water, formerly Massachusetts American Water Co., owns the pipes and water that supplies about 11,000 residents in Hull, Hingham and part of Cohasset.
Its water rates are among the highest in the country.
