Golden Valley pump and filter maker Pentair Inc. will join forces with competitor ITT Industries Inc. to create a motor manufacturing company called Faradyne Motors.

The joint venture will specialize in making quiet motors for pumps that dispense well water for residences.

The pairing of ITT and Pentair also solves a supply problem that surfaced recently when a longtime supplier of motors began competing directly with both companies.

Beyond the Faradyne venture, ITT and Pentair will continue to "compete fiercely," said Pentair spokeswoman Rachael Jarosh. Pumps represent about 3 percent of Pentair's $3 billion in total revenue, and motors are a fraction of that subset.

Faradyne will be based in Newark, N.Y. The partnership will last five years but could run longer if it is successful.
